Over Day Centre is providing weekly chair-based exercise classes with qualified instructor, Jane Dobinson. Each half-hour session is designed to gently work the whole body, to music, in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Everyone can join in – no matter their age, and no matter their health conditions. Participants can choose to do as little or as much as they feel capable of doing, and even the smallest amount of exercise, done regularly, can make the world of difference to how a person feels both physically and emotionally.
As Age UK state: “It’s a myth that getting older means an end to being active… being active is the secret ingredient to health and happiness, and it can help us reduce the risk of everything from cancer to heart disease. Moving more helps your thinking skills – like problem-solving, decision-making and remembering facts and words. Being active can lessen aches and pains, help you stay steady on your feet and boost your mood.”
You don’t have to go to the gym or even join an exercise class. The NHS are keen to point out that any “light activity” can help a person to feel better. You just have to keep moving, and avoid sitting or lying down for too long. Even getting up to make a cut of tea, bustling around the house with a duster, or vacuuming the living-room all counts as exercise. It’s all about little and often.
The additional benefit, however, of joining a class (like the ones here at Over Day Centre) is that you have the chance to meet people and make new friends. You’re also guaranteed the support and encouragement of an instructor like Jane Dobinson.
The dates of our upcoming exercise classes over the next few months are on our What’s On page, so please take a look and then contact us to book in.
